Lady Bears blank Tougaloo with record-setting performance

Carrying over the momentum built from Saturday's win at Arkansas-Cossatot, the Lady Bears put together a complete team effort in record-setting fashion, Tuesday at Tougaloo, walking away with a 13-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

"Lots of goal scorers, lots of opportunities," Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said. "It is definitely what we needed, and it is our first time starting off our season 3-1."

The offensive onslaught helped set a pair of records for the Southwest Women's Soccer program. The 13-goal shutout sets a new record for largest margin of victory and most goals scored in a game.

The Lady Bears (3-1) got things going early on. In the 13th minute Evie Peet, fresh off a big week, last week, put the visitors on the board first with a goal on an assist by Tristan Byrd.

Southwest maintained the 1-0 advantage before building upon it in the 39th minute with a goal from Gabby Venable who was assisted by Kayla Martin. With under a minute to go in the first half, Byrd contributed again, this time as the scorer after getting a pass from Mary Claire McCurley making it a 3-0 match.

The stellar play carried over into the early stages of the second quarter. Ava Benton made her presence known scoring the next two goals in the 50th and 55th minutes on assists from Peet and Maylee McLeod, respectively.

The scoring frenzy continued for the Lady Bears as Venable assisted on the next two goals, one from Peet in the 59th minute and one from Martin in the 60th, the latter of the two made it a 7-0 lead.

The hits kept coming for Southwest as in the 62nd minute as Venable continued her big night with another goal on an assist from Martin who then scored her second goal of the night two minutes later following a key pass form Byrd.

Down the stretch, Southwest capped the scoring with goals from Amari Simmons, Martin, Arely Diaz and McCleod on assists from McCurley, Caroline Barcelona, Bryanna Andrews and Mallory Martin, respectively.

The match was called with 6:00 remaining.

In the goal, the combinations of Josi Spears and Kiera Schwartz helped shut down the Bulldog attack.

Offensively, Martin led the Lady Bears with three goals and two assists while Venable had two goals and two assists.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Friday hosting Pensacola State at 4 p.m.
