The Lady Bears welcomed in East Central Tuesday evening hoping to turn things around following Friday's tough loss to No. 4 Jones in the MACCC opener. And even though they were looking to set the tone early, they were unable to do so as the Lady Warriors grabbed the lead and never let up, handing Southwest a 5-2 loss.
"I think that our biggest thing is finding consistency," Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said. "The defense has played well every single game but this has been one game where our defense has struggled."
The Lady Bears (2-5, 0-2) found themselves down 1-0 eight minutes in as the Lady Warriors rallied early. Less than two minutes later, the deficit grew to 2-0 for Southwest.
Down but not out, the Lady Bears fought back. About eight minutes into the second half, Caroline Barcelona put Southwest on the board with a goal on an assist from Aoife Saunders. But East Central quickly responded less than a minute later with another goal pushing its lead back to two.
With just under 24 and a half minutes to go, a Saunders corner kick found its mark as Barcelona sent a header past the Lady Warrior keeper and into the net for Southwest's second goal making it a 3-2 deficit.
Down the stretch, however East Central got two additional goals to pull away and take the win.
The Lady Bears return to action on Friday at 1 p.m. with a contest at Northwest.
