Lady Bears defeat Southern-Shreveport, 71-61

The Lady Bears closed out the annual Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic Tuesday night with a 71-61 win over the Lady Jaguars of Southern-Shreveport.
 
The win leaves the Lady Bears with a 5-1 mark as they go into the Thanksgiving break. The Lady Jaguars dropped to 4-5.
 
After falling behind early, 4-0, the Lady Bears roared back to take a 12-11 lead on Sydni Tangle's three-pointer with 1:15 left in the opening quarter. A late layup gave the visitors a 13-12 advantage a 13-12 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
With the game tied 16-all early in the second quarter, the Lady Bears went on a 17-4 run with a D'Mya Wilson jumper leaving them on top 33-20 with 4:24 on the clock.
 
A 13-4 run by the Lady Jaguars then trimmed the home team lead to 37-33 with 1:00 showing. A free throw by Taylor Ben just before the end of the half sent the Lady Bears into the locker room with a 39-33 lead.
 
The Lady Bears led 48-43 with 2:28 left in the third quarter, but the Lady Jaguars fought back to tie the game at 51-51 with one quarter still to play.
 
The Lady Jaguars took a brief 54-53 lead early in the fourth quarter. But, a 15-2 run, capped by a Jolie Williams basket, put the Lady Bears on top 68-56 with 3:06 remaining and they would go on to get the 10-point victory.
 
"We fought through some adversity tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We had some freshmen make some big plays when we needed them; Taylor had some big 3's late and D'Mya gave us a spark in the second half."
 
Ben topped the Lady Bears' offense, and led all scorers, with 15 points. Wilson was also in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Bears were 9-16 at the free throw line.
 
Brianasia Owens led the Lady Jaguars with 12 points. She and her teammates were 4-9 at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears return to the court on December 4 when they host Northwest Mississippi. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
