Box Score Just 48 hours removed from a convincing 3-1 win over Jacksonville College, the Lady Bears kept the momentum on the home side Sunday evening, delivering a 1-0 non-conference win over Co-Lin.
"It was a very scrappy game, with lots of fouls on both sides," Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said. "We have to match the energy if a team is going to come out like that. At the end, we kept our composure, and we were able to put one away."
The Lady Bears (2-0) went toe-to-toe with the Lady Wolves for all of the first half as both sides had chances to score but the opposing defenses shut the door on those opportunities.
It wasn't long in the second half before Southwest broke through. In the 54
th minute Ava Benton corralled a rebound inside the box and instead of taking the shot herself, passed the ball off to teammate Nicole Galvan before the freshman sent a beautiful shot to the upper left corner of the goal for the score giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
"Ava saw me as I shouted to her and she gave me the ball and I knew that if I hit it right, it was a goal," said Galvan reflecting on now her second goal in two matches on the young season.
From then on, the Southwest defense stepped up, led by stellar play from freshman goalkeeper Addison Champagne who shined with 25 total saves including several in one-one-one situations. Two of those saves came with under 10:00 to go as Co-Lin pushed hard for the tying score.
"Really, I just think of it as 0-0 and anything can happen," said Champagne explaining her simple mindset. "Just save it, just get your hands on it, just put a leg, a body out there, anything."
Down the stretch, Champagne and the Lady Bears buckled down, halting one last Co-Lin push to preserve the win.
Southwest will be back in action on Wednesday with a road contest in Daphne, AL against the United States Sports University at 5 p.m.
