Going into Tuesday's contest at Jones, the Lady Bears knew that it would be a tough test against the No. 5 Bobcats. But Southwest rose to the challenge and held Jones in check for most of the evening, however, it wasn't quite enough as the Lady Bears fell 2-1.
"All in all, I'd say that we are very happy with the results that we got tonight," Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said. "It is always difficult playing not only the No. 5 team in the nation but also they are the (defending) Division II National Champs. We battled (but) there were slight moments of switching off and not executing. But our girls never stopped fighting."
Southwest (4-6-2, 1-5 MACCC) came out with an aggressive approach, but it was the Bobcats who struck first, getting a goal in the 16
th minute putting the Lady Bears down 1-0.
The Lady Bears' hard work paid off in the 29
th minute as Amari Simmons lit up the visitors' side of the scoreboard with a goal, tying the match at 1.
However, about a minute later, the Bobcats rallied and got another score to take a 1-goal advantage once again.
As time continued to tick away, Southwest kept pressing and had additional opportunities to pull even, but could not capitalize as Jones sealed the win.
Southwest will be back in action on Friday at Hinds at 5 p.m.
