Lady Bears fall to 9th-ranked Jones on Sophomore Night

In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, the Lady Bears were unable to sustain their first-half success as they fell to 9th-ranked Jones Thursday night, 69-55, on Sophomore Night in Summit.
 
Despite the loss, the Lady Bears remained in the 2nd place in the MACJC South with a 8-4 record; they dropped to 15-6 overall. Jones moved to 121-0 in the South and 18-2 overall.
 
The first quarter was a back and forth affair with five ties and three lead changes. The Lady Bears took their first lead of the night, 9-7, on a Shylia McGee layup with 4:44 on the clock.
 
After Jones scored five straight to regain the lead, the Lady Bears scored seven straight to end the quarter and take a 16-14 lead.
 
A 16-0 run, capped by a McGee jumper, that began in the first quarter left extended the Lady Bears' lead to 28-14 with 7:47 left in the second quarter.
 
After Jones trimmed their deficit to 28-19, a Jolie Williams three pointer and Sydni Tangle free throw gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the night, 37-19, with 1:59 left before halftime.

Jones then outscored the Lady Bears 8-1 to close out the quarter and leave the Lady Bears on top 38-27 at intermission.
 
Jones outscored the Lady Bears 15-3 to open the third quarter to go on top 42-41 with 3:30 showing.
 
The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter before a McGee free throw with 0:02 on the clock gave the Lady Bears a 47-46 lead with one quarter still to play.
 
The fourth quarter belonged to the visitors. Jones took the lead for good, 51-49, with 6:50 left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bears would be unable to get any closer than eight points the rest of the way as Jones left town with the win.
 
"I was very proud of our team's effort and focus tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Our defense was exceptional. We needed a few more plays offensively and the story could have been different."
 
McGee led the Lady Bears' offense with 15 points while Williams also scored in double figures with 12 points. The Lady Bears were 12-20 at the free throw line.
 
Keyara Jones topped the visitors with 22 points. She and her teammates made 17 of 21 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears return to the court on February 17 in Poplarville as they visit the Pearl River Lady Wildcats. Tipoff of the South Division contest is set for 5:30.
