The Lady Bears gave host Mississippi Gulf Coast all they wanted Monday night in Perkinston, but in the end it was the Lady Bulldogs who emerged victorious in their MACJC South Division game, 78-69.

The Lady Bears and Jolie Williams came out on fire in the opening quarter as Williams nailed three treys, and recorded 16 points to help the Lady Bears take a 22-8 lead with 3:48 left in the opening quarter.

Gulf Coast then outscored the Lady Bears 9-3 to close out the quarter and pull to within 25-17.

Gulf Coast opened the second quarter on an 11-3 run to tie the game at 28-28 with 6:13 before the half. The Lady Bears would score 14 of the final 21 points of the quarter to go into the locker room with a 42-35 lead.

The Lady Bears (9-3, 2-1) extended their lead to 46-37 early in the third quarter. Gulf Coast then began chipping away at that lead and drew to within 55-52 at the end of the quarter.

After Sydni Tangle hit a trey early in the final quarter to give the Lady Bears a 58-52 lead, Gulf Coast went on an 11-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 64-62, with 4:36 remaining.

The Lady Bears answered quickly to knot the game at 64-64. But, an 11-2 run put Gulf Coast back on top, 75-66, with 0:54 on the clock, and they went on to claim the win.

"We shot the ball well early to get the lead," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. But, he said, "(Gulf Coast) obviously have a strong presence (and) they had some people step up and make some big threes."

"But," Harris continued, "we had several opportunities inside their zone and in transition that we took for granted and it cost us tonight."

Williams paced the Lady Bears with 26 points in the game while Tangle was also in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Bears were 8-11 at the free throw line.

Daphane White led the Gulf Coast offense with 26 points. She and her teammates made 22 of 25 free throws.

The Lady Bears return home for their next contest as they host Co-Lin Thursday night in a scheduled 5:30 South Division contest.
