Lady Bears suffer tough overtime loss to visiting Meridian

It was a tough day for the Southwest Lady Bears as they surrendered a first-half lead and fell 4-3 to the visiting Lady Eagles of Meridian in overtime Tuesday afternoon.
 
The loss put the Lady Bears at 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in the MACJC South. Meridian moved to 2-1 and 2-0.
 
With an assist from Janiya Watkins, Nohemy Giraldo scored in the 2nd minute to put the Lady Bears on top 1-0. They made it 2-0 at halftime when Taylor Laurent scored in the 14th minutes on a shot from 40 yards out that dropped from the Meridian keeper's hands and rolled into the goal. Giraldo picked up the assist.
 
Meridian picked up picked up a goal in the 61st minute from Effie Morrison to pull the visitors to within 2-1. But, the Lady Bears quickly answered when Somer Land took the ball from a Brinkley Gallant cross and scored to make it 3-1 in the 63rd minute.
 
Goals from Abbey Pate and Morrison, in the 70th and 78th minute, respectively, then tied the game at 3-3. With neither team able to score in the final 12:00 of regulation, the game went into overtime.
 
Meridian then picked up the win on Morrison's third goal of the game 4:00 minutes into extra play.
 
The Lady Bears take to the road for their next contest, visiting the Pearl River Lady Wildcats in Poplarville Friday night. The game is scheduled to get underway at 5:00.
