Sophomore night did not go off as planned at Southwest Mississippi Community College Thursday night as the MACJC basketball season came to an end for the Lady Bears in a 70-56 loss to visiting Hinds. For the Bears, their 79-65 loss was doubly disappointing as it kept them from advancing to the state and regional playoffs. The Lady Bears ended their year at 3-20 overall and 0-12 in the South Division while the Bears finished the season 10-13 and 5-7.
The Lady Bears led for most of the first half of their game and held a six-point advantage, 10-4, after a Shaniece Sheffield basket with 16:42 to play. Hinds then tied the game at 17-17 at the 9:59 mark and went on top 19-18 with 8:34 to go before the break. Southwest stayed close the rest of the half, trailing by no more than six points, and entered the locker room at intermission trailing by only five points, 32-27.
Southwest was able to stay close for the first few minutes of the second half, but could never quite find the right combination to overcome the Lady Bulldogs (4-19, 2-10). Hinds took a 12-point lead, 59-47, with 6:27 to play in the game and never looked back as they pulled away for the easy win.
Shanekqua Bibbs led Southwest, and all scorers, with 19 points on the night. Shaniece Sheffield and Cassie Berry were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Lacey Orr ended the game with seven points while Alexis Avery and Casey Brumfield both finished with two. Alex Newsome added one point. The Lady Bears hit 11 of 21 free throws.
Hinds was led by Carmen Smith’s 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs were eight of 13 from the free throw line.
