Fourth quarter free throws help Lady Bears defeat visiting Delgado

Overcoming a sluggish third quarter, the Lady Bears came back strong in the fourth to overcome the visiting Lady Dolphins of Delgado Community College 63-49 to start the 2026 portion of the schedule.

With a long-range bomb from Mady Smith giving them a 3-0 lead with 8:54 on the clock, the Lady Bears looked ready to put the game away early. Three more treys in the quarter helped the Lady Bears move out to a 17-7 lead.

A scoring drought of almost 6:00 allowed Delgado do get back in the game in second quarter as they pulled to within 31-25 at intermission.

Mercedes Dorsey scored eight points for the Lady Bears in the third quarter, but Delgado's play continued strong as they outscored the Lady Bears (4-7) 18-12 to even the score at 43-43 with one quarter remaining.

The teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter before the Lady Bears took the lead for good, 57-55, with 3:17 remaining on a pair of free throws by Smith.

Charity shots proved to be the difference in the end as the Lady Bears made 11 of 13 in the final quarter and 16 of 21 overall. Delgado went to the line 17 times, making only 7.

Dorsey and Gracie Miller both scored 15 points to top the Lady Bears' offense. Smith was also in double figures with 14.

The Lady Bears return to action on January 8 when they host Panola College in another 3:00 start.
