Box Score Following Tuesday's draw against Co-Lin to open conference play, the Lady Bears put together a better performance Friday against East Central with a big second half in a 3-1 win.
After the match, Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said that adjustments at halftime proved beneficial as all three Lady Bear goals were scored in the final 45:00 of play.
"I think that we came out a little flat and didn't play up to our capabilities and at halftime it wasn't about negatives, it was about what can we do and I think that a little shift in mentality and work ethic allowed us to score," she said.
In the first half, the Lady Bears (5-0-2, 1-0-1 MACCC) tried to set the tone early and despite an aggressive style of play, they could not score.
In the second half, however, things began to pick up. Mallory Martin kicked things off in the 48
th minute with a goal on an assist from Tiaona Frick giving Southwest a 1-0 advantage.
East Central drew even in the 54
th minute with a goal. The score only motivated the Lady Bears further as they capitalized on an opportunity in the 83
rd minute when Nicole Galvan got a pass from Zoey Brown before finding the back of the net, once again, putting Southwest on top at 2-1.
"I always hear Nicole screaming and I always see her back there, so I say that 'Nicole is there,'" Brown said. "I heard her, spotted her and she did what she had to do."
Not even a minute later, Brown continued her strong play with a goal of her own making the score the eventual final.
Southwest is back on the road Tuesday visiting East Mississippi at 5 p.m.
