Box Score It was the start to the 2025 regular season that Southwest Women's Soccer Head Coach Nicole Cooper had hoped for.
After being down 1-0 not long into Friday's regular season-opening match at home against Jacksonville College, the Lady Bears did not panic and rattled-off three consecutive goals to claim a 3-1 win.
"It's always a great day when you come away with the 'W'," Cooper said. "We continuously tell the girls whoever shows up that day and performs is going to come out victorious so just focusing on the elements that we can control like our mindset, our mentality, our effort; if we keep hitting those, every single game, we should win a lot more than last year."
The Lady Bears (1-0) lost a bit of momentum early on as the Lady Jaguars grabbed the advantage with a goal in the 14
th minute.
But Southwest stuck to their aggressive style and it paid off less than 13:00 later as sophomore captain Evie Peet set up freshman Nicole Galvan for a goal, tying the match at 1.
The goal provided momentum for the Lady Bears which carried over into the second half. This time it was Galvan who assisted, setting up Zoey Brown for a goal giving Southwest its first lead at 2-1 at the 54:07 mark.
One last goal from Chloe Beth Rodriguez on an assist from Peet secured the third and final score for the Lady Bears.
Afterward, Peet said that she was proud of the way her team showed great resilience, battling back.
"We reacted very well after the first goal," she said. "And it was just a very positive performance from the whole team."
The Lady Bears return to action on Sunday at 5 p.m. hosting Co-Lin in non-conference action.
