Lady Bears fall to LSU-Eunice in overtime

The Lady Bears gave it their best shot, but were unable to hang on as they fell to the LSU-Eunice Lady Bengals, 88-79 in overtime, Tuesday night in the final round of the Coca-Cola Classic.

The game was tight from the outset as neither team led by more than six points in the first quarter. A Keyona Royal basket had the Bears on top 8-4 with 5:12 left in the quarter while Eunice led 18-12 at the end of the first 10:00.

Nine points in the second quarter from Mercedes Dorsey helped the Lady Bears stay close, but Eunice took a 32-32 lead into the locker room at the end of the first half.

The Lady Bengals maintained their lead in the third quarter, but were unable to get ahead by more than six points. A short jumper from Dorsey pulled the Lady Bears to within a pair, 53-51, with 1:45 on the clock before they trailed 55-53 at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Bengals seemed poised to pull away in the fourth quarter as they went up 72-61 with 4:05 left in the game.

The home team refused to give in, however. A Talana Bond three pointer, with 2:49 to go, started the Lady Bears on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 74-74 with 0:20 still remaining. No score by either team in the final seconds forced the game into the extra session.

The Lady Bengals would then outscore the Lady Bears 14-5 in the extra frame to escape with the win.

"I was super proud of our effort," said Lady Bears had coach Brent Harris. "We had to change a bunch defensively and offensively."

"Mercedes had another strong night," Harris continued. "We need shots to fall in critical moments to get a lead."

Dorsey led all scorers in the game with 30 points. Gracie Miller and Mady Smith were also in double figures, both with 14 points.

The Lady Bears made 13 of 23 free throws.

The Lady Bears return to action on November 22 when they travel to Carthage, Texas, to face Panola College. Tipoff is set for 3:0
