Entering Saturday, the red-hot Lady Bears were hoping to keep their recent surge going against a fellow region opponent in LSU-Eunice, on the road. And despite a few bumps in the early stages of the game, Southwest made the necessary adjustments late before pulling out a 71-55 win over the Lady Bengals. The win marked the seventh in the last eight games for Southwest.
"We were not exactly dialed in early on," Southwest head coach Brent Harris said. "We must learn that life on the road in college is not easy and serious preparation will lead to success every time. We had a size advantage inside and got something going late and it always helps to make some timely 3's."
Early on, the Lady Bears (7-3) got a balanced scoring attack with six different players registering points in the first quarter, led by Kennedee Shelton who recorded seven of her game-high 17 points in the opening period. But the Lady Bengals kept pace as Southwest took a 23-21 lead heading into the second quarter.
It was much of the same in the second quarter as both Southwest and Eunice scored 14 points apiece to make it a 37-35 game at the half.
In the third, the Lady Bear defense ramped-up as Eunice was limited to two players scoring a combined eight points while on the other side of the floor, Southwest put up 12, half of which coming from Bethany Graves. Kalea Storm also nailed a 3-pointer during the period, and it later sparked the long-range shooting for the Lady Bears as they connected on three more in the fourth including two from Veronica Williams as Southwest continued to put the clamps down on the Eunice offense helping to seal the win.
In addition to Shelton's big day, Southwest also got 13 points from Graves while Morgan Sullivan posted 11 and Kara Beth Addison nine.
The Lady Bears will wrap the 2023 portion of their schedule on Thursday hosting Jones.
