Lady Bears come up short against Kilgore

Southwest entered Saturday's contest against Kilgore, hoping to get over Friday's tough loss against No. 19 Tyler. But mistakes and miscues hurt the Lady Bears as they came up short against the Lady Rangers, falling 56-46.

"They are very talented but I will say, the 50-50 plays, the rebounds that are ours if we just go get it, that is what we just told them, that is the part that hurts, because that one was within our grasp," Southwest head coach Brent Harris said. "Obviously Kilgore is very athletic and very talented. We are going to learn from our film because there were so many plays were we were just hoping it would come to us instead of going to get it."

Navaeh Craft kicked-off the scoring for the Lady Bears (0-2) at the 8:15 mark, but unfortunately the offense went cold afterward for a stretch of 5:30. Kara Beth Addison broke the streak at 2:45 with a basket but the Lady Rangers enjoyed a 12-point advantage.

The Lady Bears kept battling but the Lady Rangers kept finding a way to get the ball in the hoop despite a tough Southwest defense. At the end of the first quarter, Southwest trailed 17-5.

Things began to pick up a bit more for the Lady Bears in the second quarter. A 6-2 run highlighted by a pair of makes from Addison narrowed the gap. Southwest pulled within six at the 2:20 mark but Kilgore closed the quarter with a pair of makes pushing the deficit for the Lady Bears to 10 once again.

The Lady Bears once again rallied to pull within five at the 7:06 mark in the third quarter as a pair of Michaela Payton free throws made it a 30-25 game.

In the fourth, a Lady Rangers rally about halfway through the period prevented the Lady Bears from getting back into the contest.

Addison led Southwest with 11 points.

The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday with a road game against Mississippi Delta at 6 p.m.
