Lady Bears' season ends with 67-65 regional tourney loss at Coahoma

The Lady Bears' season came to an unfortunate end Monday night in Clarksdale as they fell to host Coahoma Community College 67-65 in the NJCAA Region XXIII Tournament.
 
The game was close from start to finish with Coahoma leading 24-18 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Scoring was at a premium in the second quarter. The Lady Bears (9-5) outscored Coahoma (12-3) 7-5 to pull to within 29-25 at intermission.
 
Shylia McGee and Sydni Tangle both scored seven points for the Lady Bears in the third quarter as they outscored Coahoma 22-15 to take a 47-44 lead into the final quarter.
 
The final quarter was the same as the first three with the teams trading baskets throughout. The Lady Bears led briefly, but were unable to sustain the lead as Coahoma held on for the win.
 
"Tonight, we fought hard and we showed a great deal of toughness," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We just needed a break or two down the stretch. These sophomores have been a joy to coach and go to war with; statistics cannot tell the whole story on many of (them). We are proud they chose Southwest Mississippi."
 
Harris concluded his post-game comments by saying "This will be one of the most memorable teams we will ever coach. Obviously, that (had) a lot to do with the pandemic, but also with how they handled this adversity. We had very few bad practices (and) we had a team-first mentality all year long."
 
McGee and Tangle both scored 17 points to lead the Lady Bears' offense. Mikayla Etienne followed with 14 points.

The Lady Bears went 7-14 at the free throw line.
 
Coahoma's Jurnee McLaurin led all scorers with 20 points. She and her teammates combined to make 13 of 20 free throws.
