Lady Bears open 2021 with 81-63 home win over Hinds

The Lady Bears passed their opening test of the 2021 season with flying colors Monday night as they defeated the visiting Hinds Lady Bulldogs 81-63.
 
After falling behind early, 2-0, a Shylia McGee layup capped a 10-2 run by the Lady Bears that put them on top for good, 10-4, with 5:53 left in the opening quarter.
 
After Hinds picked up three quick points, Analya White scored back-to-back buckets for the Lady Bears to give them a 17-7 advantage with 2:01 on the clock. They went on to lead 17-9 at the end of the quarter.
 
A Mikayla Etienne trey and McGee jumper in the second quarter gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the first half, 33-17, with 3:55 on the clock. They would go on to hold a 43-29 advantage at intermission.
 
The third quarter was essentially all Lady Bears as they took their largest lead of the night, 61-43, on a Courtney Bradford layup with 2:53 on the clock. They then carried a 61-49 lead into the final quarter.
 
Hinds cut their deficit to 61-51 early in the final quarter, but could come no closer as the Lady Bears went on to record the win.
 
"I was very proud of our effort tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Shylia and Mikayla were good offensively and we had some young players play well in the post."
 
McGee led all scorers in the game with 22 points. White followed with 19 points while Etienne finished with 15. The Lady Bears made good on 16 of 21 free throws.
 
Sade Thompson led Hinds with 18 points. She and her teammates went 10-19 at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears hit the road for their next contest as they travel to Ellisville on February 4 to face the Jones Lady Bobcats. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
