A large and vocal home crowd was on hand Thursday night as the Lady Bears took firm control of 2nd place in the MACJC's South Division with a convincing 62-50 win over the Lady Bulldogs of Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The win, their fifth straight and sixth in seven games, pushed the Lady Bears record to 15-4 overall and 8-2 in the South. Gulf Coast fell to 14-4 and 6-4.

A layup and three-point shot from Taylor Ben helped the Lady Bears take an 8-0 lead with 7:09 left in the opening quarter.  A pair of free throws from Jerryonne Owens, with 3:05 on the clock, extended their lead to 16-3 and they would go on to take a 16-7 lead into the second quarter.

A 12-4 run by Gulf Coast cut the Lady Bears' lead to 22-19 with 3:29 left in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter before the Lady Bears went into intermission with a 28-23 advantage.

The Lady Bears led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter before Gulf Coast narrowed the score to 43-39 with 0:11 on the clock. A trey from Sydni Tangle then put the Lady Bears on top 46-39 with one quarter remaining.

Gulf Coast trimmed the Lady Bears' lead to 46-44 with 8:46 left in the fourth quarter. But, treys from Ben and Jolie Williams served as bookends to a 14-2 run by the Lady Bears that gave them a 60-46 lead, their largest of the game, and effectively put the game on ice. The Lady Bears would go on to claim the win by 12 points.

"I was really proud of our team effort tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We made some interior plays against their zone and our shooters made some shots."

"Jade Myles was very strong on both ends," Harris went on, "and all of our posts were good against a tough matchup."

Ben led all scorers in the game with a season-high 20 points. Williams was also in double figures with 12 points while Tangle finished the night with 10. The Lady Bears went 9-11 at the free throw line.

Mia Goolsby and Daphane White both scored 16 points to pace the Gulf Coast offense. The visitors were 8-9 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears hit the road north to Wesson for their next contest as they visit Co-Lin on February 10 for another crucial South Division contest. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
