Lady Bears win big over Mississippi Delta

The Lady Bears returned to the win column Monday evening with an 83-66 home win over the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans.
 
After an early tie, a Jolie Williams trey ignited a 14-2 run by the Lady Bears (8-2) that left them with a 17-5 lead with 3:47 left in the opening quarter. They then took a 19-12 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Mississippi Delta (4-7) narrowed their deficit to 21-17 with 9:39 left in the second quarter. But, a 17-2 run, capped by another Williams three pointer, extended the Lady Bears' lead to 38-19 with 5:25 on the clock. They would go on to take a 46-29 lead into intermission.
 
A Williams layup with 8:15 left in the third quarter gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the night, 51-29. Mississippi Delta trimmed that lead to 61-51 at the end of the quarter.
 
With 4:49 left in the game, the visitors cut the Lady Bears lead below double digits, 73-64. But, a Shylia McGee bucket with 2:49 on the clock put the home team lead back to 13 points, 79-66, and they went on to pick up the 15-point win.
 
"We were very proud of our start, especially defensively," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We just need to be more consistent."
 
"Shylia did some good things, offensively," Harris continued. "Jolie hit some shots and Jerryonne Owens gave us another great night inside."
 
Williams led all scorers in the game with 23 points while McGee netted 19. The Lady Bears hit 15 of 20 free throws.
 
Antanisha Wade led the Mississippi Delta offense with 17 points. She and her teammates made good on 14 of 21 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears return to court, and resume MACJC South Division play, Thursday night at Meridian Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
