Lady Bears win at Meridian, 65-45

The Lady Bears moved to 2-0 in the MACJC South Thursday night with a 65-45 win over the host Lady Eagles of Meridian.
 
The Lady Bears (9-2) took control of the game early, moving out to a 10-5 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Shylia McGee with 5:56 left in the opening quarter.
 
Just over 2:00 later, a Jade Myles layup gave the Lady Bears a 17-5 advantage and they went on to take a 19-12 lead into the second quarter.
 
The Lady Bears outscored their hosts 19-6 in the second quarter. A pair of McGee free throws, with 1:17 on the clock, gave them their largest lead of the half, 38-16. They led 38-18 at the end of the half.
 
The Lady Eagles (3-8, 0-2) made a comeback attempt in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Bears 18-9 to pull to within 47-36 with one quarter still to play.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears' lead would get no less than11 points. A 10-0 run to end the game would give them the final margin of victory.
 
"I was extremely proud of their focus tonight," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "All our post players answered the call. Alexus Marsh and Jade got off to a good start and our transition game got going early in the second half. Shylia made some nice decisions."
 
McGee topped the Lady Bears' offense with 13 points. The team combined to make 19 of 27 free throws.
 
The Lady Eagles' LaChrisha Williams led all scorers with 18 points. She and her teammates were 7-15 at the free throw line.
 
The Lady Bears remain on the road for their next game as they travel to Perkinston on January 13 for a 5:30 matchup against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
