The Lady Bears passed their first MACJC South Division test of 2019-20 with flying colors as a third-quarter surge powered them to a 69-48 home win Monday night over the Lady Bulldogs of Hinds. It was the Lady Bears sixth consecutive win of the season.

The teams traded baskets through most of the opening quarter. Hinds took its biggest lead, 4-0. A D'Mya Wilson layup with 4:40 on the clock gave the Lady Bears (7-1,1-0) their largest lead of the quarter, 10-5.

Hinds outscored the Lady Bears 9-4 the rest of the quarter to leave the teams knotted at 14-14 heading into the second quarter.

The second quarter was much like the first with two lead changes and a tie. The Lady Bears matched their largest lead of the half, 30-25, on a Jolie Williams bucket with time running out in the half and they carried the same score into intermission.

With 6:32 remaining in the third quarter, Hinds (2-4, 0-1) took a 35-34 lead. But, the rest of the quarter would belong to the Lady Bears.

Going on a 15-0 run, the Lady Bears went on top 49-35 with 1:51 on the clock. They would not be headed the remainder of the night.

In the final quarter, a Taylor Ben jumper gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the night, 64-40, with 5:05 still to play. They would go on to pick up the 21-point victory.

"We are very proud of our team for their focus," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Our post players competed inside tonight, especially Jerryonne Owens."

"D'Mya was explosive in the open court," Harris continued, "and that got us going in the third quarter."

Wilson topped all scorers with 18 points in the game. Williams was also in double figures with 12 points. The Lady Bears hit 14 of 17 free throws.

Kerrigan Johnson led the Hinds offense with 15 points. She and her teammates went 5-10 at the free throw line.

After taking time off for the Christmas and New Year's holidays, the Lady Bears will return to the court on January 4 when they visit Baton Rouge Community College.
