The Lady Bears staged a second-half comeback Thursday night to defeat MACJC South Division foe Hinds, 76-71, and clinch a spot in next week's state tournament.

The win pushed the Lady Bears to 17-5 overall and 8-5 in the South. Hinds dropped to 15-7 and 6-7.

After falling behind early 5-0, a
Peyton Papenburg jumper pulled the Lady Bears to within 5-2 with 8:09 left in the first quarter. Hinds then scored 15 of the final 23 points of the quarter to take a 20-10 advantage after the first 10:00 of play.

Things did not get any better for the Lady Bears in the second quarter. Hinds took their biggest lead of the night, 36-21, with 3:21 on the clock and they went on to hold a 40-28 lead at intermission.

Back-to-back treys from
Danyelle Lewis, a pair of Keturah Bingham free throws and Papenburg's layup cut the Lady Bears' deficit to 40-38 with 7:52 left in the third quarter.

Trailing 47-42, the Lady Bears outscored Hinds 7-2 to take a 50-49 lead with 2:59 still to play in the third. The teams then traded baskets before Hinds carried a 57-55 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bears trailed 63-60 with 6:07 remaining in the fourth quarter. A pair of Lewis free throws and a
Rachel Thompson layup then served as bookends to an 11-0 run by the Lady Bears that put them on top 71-63 with 3:08 to go.

Hinds pulled to within a point, 72-71, with 0:46 on the clock, but a jumper and two free throws from Papenburg cinched the win for the Lady Bears.

"I'm extremely proud of our entire team for their comeback attitude through some serious adversity," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Danyelle made some big shots to start the second half which made our path to a comeback win easier and Keturah showed her character and level of toughness tonight."

Bingham and Lewis both scored 20 points to lead the Lady Bears while Papenburg was also in double figures with 12 points. The Lady Bears hit 18 of 25 free throws.

Hinds' Victoria Johnson topped all scorers with 22 points. She and her teammates combined to go 9-11 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears close out the regular season Thursday night at home with Sophomore Night against the Lady Bulldogs of Gulf Coast. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
