Lady Bears put five in double figures to get fourth straight win

With five players scoring in double figures, the Lady Bears picked up their fourth straight win Thursday night with a 70-55 MACJC South Division defeat of the visiting East Central Lady Warriors.
 
A
Peyton Papenburg three pointer and Keturah Bingham layup helped the Lady Bears take a 7-2 lead with 4:42 left in the first quarter. East Central would respond with a 10-3 run to close out the quarter and take a 12-10 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Beginning with a
Rachel Thompson jumper and a three pointer from Amari Pittman, the Lady Bears (14-3, 5-3) opened the second quarter on an 8-3 run to reclaim the lead, 20-18, with 5:27 before halftime. The teams then traded baskets the rest of the period before a Pittman trey left the Lady Bears on top 28-26 at intermission.
 

Danyelle Lewis' trey then started the home team on a 24-6 run that saw them take their largest lead of the night, 52-32, with 1:59 left in the third quarter. They took a 52-34 lead into the final quarter.
 
After a
Jamaya Galloway jumper put the Lady Bears up 54-34 to start the fourth quarter, East Central (9-7, 2-6) outscored the Lady Bears 19-10 to pull to within 62-51 with 3:20 left in the game. A pair of Rachel Thompsonn free throws extended the Lady Bears' lead back to 64-51 with 2:12 to go and they went on to claim the 15-point victory.
 
"I was really proud of (our) discipline and focus to finish the game out," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We had balanced scoring (tonight and) we competed with more energy in the second half."
 
Leading the Lady Bears' offense with 14 points was Thompson. Pittman finished the game with 11 points. Bingham had a double-double, her fourth of the year, with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Papenburg also scored 10 points. Kacie Fountain turned in nine assists. The Lady Bears were perfect at the free throw line, making all 10 shots.
 
East Central's Whitney Waters led all scorers with 17 points. She and her teammates hit 11 of 16 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears hit the road for their next contest as they travel to Poplarville Monday night to face Pearl River Community College. The South Division matchup is set for a 5:30 start.
