Lady Bears suffer tough 2-1 opening day loss to visiting Northwest

Their season debut did not go as hoped for the Southwest Lady Bears as they dropped a 2-1 home decision to the Northwest Lady Rangers Saturday morning.
 
Kaitlyn Cooper gave the Lady Bears a 1-0 at 41:47 of the first half when she scored off an assist from Ariel Hutson. The lead held up until 59:47 of the game when Northwest knotted things at 1-1 with a goal from Abigail Morales.
 
Things stayed tied until 85:04 of the game when Morales' second goal of the day gave the Lady Rangers their winning margin.
 
Freshman Kendyl Adam had seven saves in her initial game for the Lady Bears.
 
"The improvement over last year (by the Lady Bears) is amazing," said Southwest head man Drew Gallant, "but I still don't think we played as well as we can. We had too many little pulls and injuries and hopefully we'll be better by Tuesday when we go to Holmes."
 
"I think Jessica Malloy played really well," Gallant went on, "(and) Kendyl Adam played well in goal; she had some good saves for us. Northwest is a really good team. They were second in the North (Division) last year (and) played in the (state tournament) semi-finals."
 
The Lady Bears will play Holmes at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland Tuesday with game time set for 2:00.
