Lady Bears suffer tough loss in Perkinston

The difference in the game proved to be free throws Monday night as the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs defeated the Southwest Lady Bears 70-59 in an MACJC South Division matchup in Perkinston. Gulf Coast made 21 of their 34 charity shots while the Lady Bears only went to the line 16 times total (making 10).
 
The game was close most of the first half with neither team holding more than a six point lead. Gulf Coast took a 9-7 lead with 15:03 to play while the Lady Bears went up 21-15 on Gabriella Cortez (Natchitoches, LA)bucket with 5:27 on the clock.
 
After the Lady Bears (10-10, 6-5) took their six-point lead, Gulf Coast (5-11, 2-9) scored 11 of the final 16 points of the half to send the teams into the locker room tied 26-26.
 
The second half started out much like the first, with three ties and a lead change in the first 4:40. Talisa Sherman (Richland, MS, Richland) put the Lady Bears on top 32-30 with a layup with 16:50 to play in the game. A free throw from Kalynn Smith then gave the hosts a 33-32 lead with 15:20 to go in the contest, a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
 
A jumper from Cortez had the Lady Bears down only one point, 39-38, with 10:52 on the clock. But, a 10-4 run put the Lady Bulldogs up 49-42 with 7:28 remaining and the Lady Bears would be able to come no closer than three points the rest of the game.
 
A 10-0 run gave Gulf Coast a 60-50 advantage with 1:40 to play and they went on to the 11-point win.
 
Cortez topped the Lady Bears' offense with 22 points and eight rebounds. Sherman and Cortney Epting (Jackson, MS, Lanier) were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Sherman added eight assists.
 
Gulf Coast's Smith led all scorers with 23 points.
 
The Lady Bears return to the court Thursday night when they host their arch-rival, Co-Lin. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
