BOX SCORE

The Lady Bears got their season off to a roaring start Tuesday night as they overcame a poor shooting night to defeat visiting Baton Rouge Community College 62-59.

The Lady Bears will now take a few days off before taking the court on November 9 with a 5:30 home game against the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans.

BRCC took an early 7-1 lead over the Lady Bears Tuesday night before the Lady Bears closed the gap to 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Outscoring the Lady Bears 14-2 to open the second quarter, BRCC exploded out to a 29-15 lead with 5:14 left before the break. A
Gabriella Cortez jumper then got the Lady Bears firing on all cylinders as they finished the half on a 14-4 run to draw to within four points, 33-29, going into intermission.

Ke' Asia Gray scored on back-to-back jumpers for the Lady Bears to open the second half and tie the game at 33-all. Taking a 35-33 lead on Terriel Ross' layup, BRCC scored 12 of the next 18 points to go back on top, 45-39, with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

With Cortez completing an old-fashioned three-point play, the Lady Bears then came back to regain the lead at 47-45 with 1:24 still to play in the third. BRCC picked up the final points of the quarter to lead by two, 49-47, with one quarter remaining.

It appeared midway through the fourth quarter that the game might be headed for overtime as the teams were deadlocked three times in the first 4:15. But, trailing 59-58, the Lady Bears' determination won out. A
Teshia Jones jumper put the home team on top 60-59, with 0:59 on the clock, and Alissa Adam sealed the deal with a pair of free throws with 0:10 to play.

BRCC had two chances to tie the game once more and force extra play, but a pair of three-point attempts missed the mark and the Lady Bears were able to hold on for the tight victory.

Lady Bears' head coach Brent Harris said post-game that "Obviously, it helps to get the win. But, I was proud of the toughness we showed on some of the plays-on loose balls, blocking out (and) going to get some offensive rebounds to finish."

The win for the Lady Bears came despite only 31% shooting from the field (22-70). Cortez led the way with 17 points while Jones had 16 points. Freshman
Chelsea James finished with a double-double as she tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Lady Bears made good on 14 of 18 free throws.

Ross picked up 20 points to lead the BRCC offense. The visitors hit 12 of 15 free throws.
