Lady Bears win big over Mississippi Delta

Leading from start to finish, the Southwest Lady Bears had an easy time of it Monday night as they overwhelmed the visiting Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans 89-45.
 
The Lady Bears (2-0) began their offensive explosion in the first quarter, taking an early 8-0 lead. With 3:16 on the clock, the lead went to 24-6 with an old-fashioned three-point play by Gabriella Cortez. The Lady Bears held a 28-15 advantage at the end of the quarter.
 
It was more of the same in the second quarter. Lillie Snowden connected on one of two free throws to push the Lady Bears out to a 41-21 lead with 2:37 left in the half and they took a 41-25 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Bears' lead moved to 59-31 on A' Keyia McDyess' free throw with 1:05 showing and they went into the fourth quarter on top 59-36. The Lady Bears took their biggest lead, and reached the final score, on a Terica Barnes bucket with 0:30 left in the game.
 
"It was a great team effort," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Gabby got us going offensively. Everyone competed (and) everyone scored tonight." Harris did say that the team needed to "finish scramble plays better."
 
Making good on nine of 11 field goals and four of five free throws, Cortez led the Lady Bears offense with 22 points. Also in double figures were Teshia Jones, with 15 points, Shalisa Hawthorne (11 points) and Snowden (10 points). The Lady Bears made 13 of 21 free throws.
 
O'Nesha Hunt topped the Lady Trojans (0-3) with 11 points. The visitors made 14 of 22 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears return to the court, and continue their season-opening home stand, with a Friday contest against Spring Hill College. Fans should note the tip off time has changed to 4:00.
