The Southwest Lady Bears outshot their hosts, 47% to 39%, in the first half and trailed by only three, 38-35, at the break, but unfortunately ran out of steam in the second half as East Central pulled away for a 95-70 win Monday in Decatur. The game marked the end of the first half of MACJC South Division play for both teams.

With eight ties and four lead changes, the first half gave no indication of things to come in the second.

The Lady Bears trailed 8-2 before a pair of
Teshia Jones (Stringer)free throws and Gabriella Cortez (Natchitoches Central)' layup brought them back to within two, 8-6, with 15:12 left in the opening half. Talisa Sherman (Richland)'s jumper with 8:22 on the clock but the Lady gave the Lady Bears their first lead, 19-17, with 8:22 to play and they went up 25-19 on Sherman's bucket with 5:43 to go.

The teams traded baskets and the lead over the remainder of the half. With the Lady Bears (7-9, 3-4) on top 35-33 and under 1:00 to play, the Lady Warriors (14-2, 5-2) scored the final five points of the half to take the lead into intermission.

The second half belonged to the Lady Warriors. Leading by four, 46-42, they went on a 10-0 to push their lead to 56-42 with 14:45 left in the game.

A Cortez bucket brought the Lady Bears' deficit to nine, 64-55, with 8:43 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get. The Lady Warriors went on to lead by as many as 29 points late in the game and went on to the 25-point victory.

"We did (run out of steam in the second half)," said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. "They (East Central) made a few more shots than we did and we didn't take care of the ball as well as we did early."

"But, I'm very proud of Talisa. (East Central) pressed her all night and jumper her. I thought she played one of her better games. Gabriella came in and helped her with the pressure and did some good things for us. But, overall, we just didn't meet the challenge."

Sherman led all scorers with 23 points, on 11 of 14 shooting from the field, and had six assists to pace the Lady Bears' offense. Cortez followed with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jones was also in double figures with 11 points.

Cortney Epting (Lanier) scored eight points for the Lady Bears while Lillie Snowden (Zachary) had seven, Aaliyah Williams (Bassfield) had four and Tatyana Turner (North Pike) had two. The Lady Bears made nine of 15 free throws.

Tashi-ana Thompson led five East Central players in double figures with 19 points. The Lady Warriors were good on 14 of 22 free throws.

The Lady Bears return to action Thursday night as they begin the second half of Division play with a home matchup against Pearl River. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
