Lady Bears fall hard at Co-Lin

Things were anything but good for the Southwest Lady Bears Thursday night in Wesson as they dropped a 68-42 decision to host Co-Lin. The Bears had better luck as they extended their winning streak to six games with a tight 88-87 victory over the Wolves.

The Lady Bears fell to 12-8 overall and 5-4 in the South. Dropping from a second-place tie to third place, the Southwest women trail Mississippi Gulf Coast by only one game and are ½ game ahead of fourth-place East Central.

The top four teams from both divisions advance to the state tournament beginning February 25. A top-three finish guarantees a team a spot in the Region 23 tournament the next week.

The Lady Bears fell behind early and, unlike their previous matchup with Co-Lin (a 60-59 Southwest win in Summit); they were never able to regain the composure.  The Lady Wolves (17-3, 8-1) held a 35-15 lead at the break and went up by as many as 32 points, 52-20, in the second half before ending the night with the 26-point win and solidifying their first-place spot in the Division.

“We were not focused in the shoot-around (earlier in the day),” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris, “and it showed in the game. We were not focused in any aspect of the game and they (Co-Lin) played pretty well. But, we can’t let it (the loss) get us down because there’s still a lot to play for.”

Chicurial Hill had 10 points to top the Lady Bears while Elayne Robinson had seven points and Katrina Littlepage and Fredrikah Wilson both had five.

Cassie Berry and Tee Myers both netted four points, Milesha McNulty had three and Madison Jones and Katelyn Whaley both had two. The free throw line provided the one bright spot for Southwest as they hit 19 of 24.

Chanta Poole led Co-Lin with 16 points. The Lady Wolves were six of 17 from the free throw line.

Southwest closes out the home portion of its schedules Monday and Thursday when they host Pearl River and Hinds, respectively. Game times both nights are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
