Lady Bears pick up big win over Gulf Coast

Move into second-place tie in South Division

The Southwest Lady Bears and Bears picked up two more huge MACJC South Division wins Monday when they swept visiting Mississippi Gulf Coast in Summit. The Lady Bears overcame an 11-point, first-half deficit to win 74-63 while the Bears prevailed 88-81 in overtime for their fifth straight victory.

As was the case with the wins over Jones County last Thursday, the Southwest wins against Gulf Coast avenged two early-season losses to their opponents.

With the wins, both Southwest teams move to 12-7 on the season and 5-3 in the South. The Lady Bears currently are tied for second place in the Division with Gulf Coast while the Southwest men are alone in third place, one game out of second place.

Southwest travels to Wesson Thursday night to face their arch-rivals, Co-Lin. The women tip the night off at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00.

Things did not look good for the Southwest women early in the game. Falling behind 17-6 with 11:11 to play in the half, they found themselves struggling to find their bearings. But, find them they did as they went on a 20-6 run to close out the half.

Clawing their way back into the contest, Southwest rallied to take a 23-21 lead on Katelyn Whaley’s three-pointer with 3:16 remaining on the clock. After the Lady Bulldogs (14-5, 5-3) tied the game, 23-23 on a Hellanisa Young bucket with 2:44 on the clock, the Lady Bears used three Elayne Robinson free throws to take a 26-23 lead into the locker room at the intermission.

The Lady Bears went up 33-25 on Alexis Avery’s three-pointer with 18:35 left in the game. But, Gulf Coast bounced back to tie the game on three occasions and later take a six point lead, 48-42, with 10:18 to play.

After battling back to tie the game, 50-50, on Milesha McNulty’s three-pointer with 9:02 to play, the Lady Bears took the lead for good at 52-50 when Fredrikah Wilson hit the bottom of the net with 8:16 to go.

Free throws by Katrina Littlepage and Avery gave the home team two 13-point leads late in the game and they closed out the night with the 11-point win.

“I am very proud of our team,” said Southwest head man Brent Harris. We had some adversity tonight-injuries, foul trouble, people playing out of position-and somehow, we found a way to compete and ultimately win.”

“Katrina showed great heart,” Harris went on. “Fredrikah made some strong moves offensively and Milesha was a big spark during our second half run.”

Wilson went 6-9 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line to top all scorers with 20 points. Littlepage was also in double figures with 17 points.

Whaley netted nine points for the Lady Bears while McNulty added seven and April Levy six. Avery, Cassie Berry and Tee Myers all scored four points while Robinson had three. Southwest made 19 of 23 free throws.
