Bears make home debut successful with 85-72 win over Bishop State

It was an ugly win, but a win just the same, as the Bears moved to 2-0 on the season with an 85-72 win over visiting Bishop State (1-1) Thursday night. The Bears remain at home for their next game when they host Mississippi Delta Monday night in a 7:15 contest.

Bishop State's Remondo Harris nailed a three-pointer less than a minute into the game to put the visitors on top. But, the Bears quickly got on track and, when Twymond Howard hit a bucket with 15:10 to play in the half, found themselves on top 15-5.

The Wildcats closed the gap to four points on three occasions, but the Bears held firm and went into the locker room with a 43-32 lead at the half.

The second half belonged to the Bears as their lead never fell below double digits. When Xavion Dillon hit a jumper with 11:47 on the clock, the lead had ballooned to 22 points, 65-43. A Haylen Washington layup with 0:03 on the clock brought the Wildcats to their closest point of the final half and provided the final margin of victory for Southwest.

"We felt like we were the team that lost," said Southwest head coach Casey Carter, "and we were the team that won the game. You've got to be happy and blessed with the opportunity to get to 2-0. But, we didn't play our best and there are a lot of different reasons for that."

"It's early in the year," he continued, "and we're still trying to figure ourselves out. We've got to be able to come out here and respond and play for 40 minutes. I didn't think we did that tonight. But, we won and that's a positive."

Howard led four Bears in double figures with 22 points in the game. Chris Jones and Corey Williams both added 14 points while Jaylen Moore picked up 11.

Jamal Hester and Deione Weeks both registered nine points in the game while Dillon, Justin McCray and Christian Robbins all scored two. The Bears hit 26 of 39 free throws.

Bishop State was led by Washington's 27 points. The Wildcats hit 19 of 26 free throws.
