Lady Bears start slow, fall at Meridian

It was a night of slow starts in Meridian for the Southwest basketball teams. The Lady Bears, unfortunately, were unable to recover and fell to the host Lady Eagles, 69-55, while the Bears did recover and picked up their third straight win, 72-52.

The split leaves both Southwest teams with overall records of 10-7. They are both also even in the MACJC South Division, at 3-3, as the second round of division play begins Thursday. Southwest will travel to Ellisville to face Jones County. Game times are 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.

Meridian (14-8) set the tone early as they built up a nine-point, 12-3 lead, with 13:07 to play in the first half. But, going on an 11-3 run, the Lady Bears fought back to within one point, 15-14, on Elayne Robinson’s free throw with 9:01 on the clock. The Lady Eagles regained control and outscored Southwest 13-7 the remainder of the half to take a 28-21 lead into the break.

After April Levy’s basket with 17:53 left in the game brought the Lady Bears back to within two points, 31-29, the rest of the night belonged to the hosts. Meridian built their lead to 14 points, 46-32, with 9:38 to play and, after allowing Southwest to come back to within 53-48 with 5:06 showing, and went on to win by the same margin.

“We came out with no energy,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “I’m disappointed with how we competed on the glass and how we executed some of our sets. It wasn’t a good night overall. We’ll just have to bounce back Thursday.”

Levy led the Lady Bears with 14 points in the game while Katrina Littlepage had nine and Fredrikah Wilson had eight (Wilson also grabbed 12 rebounds). Cassie Berry, Robinson and Katelyn Whaley scored six. Alexis Avery had five and Tee Myers one. Southwest hit seven of 16 free throws.

Meridian’s Reyada Stinner led all scorers with 20 points. She and her teammates combined to make 20 of 27 free throws.
