Southwest ended the first round of MACJC South Division play on a high note Thursday with a sweep of visiting East Central. The Lady Bears prevailed 71-60 while the Bears came out on top 89-80. The Lady Bears moved to 10-6 overall with the win while the Bears now stand at 9-7. Both are 3-3 in the South.

Southwest steps out of division play Monday night when they travel to Meridian. The ladies’ game gets underway at 6:00 with the men to follow at 8:00.

The Southwest ladies took an early 3-0 lead on April Levy’s trey and held the lead the entire night. But, it was not without a struggle in the first half as the Lady Warriors (4-12, 1-4 South) forced four ties and trailed by no more than seven points. Another Levy three-pointer, with 1:31 to play, gave the Lady Bears their biggest lead of the half at 29-22 and they took a 29-24 lead into the locker room at the break.

After seeing their lead shrink to two points, 42-40, with 12:33 to play, the Lady Bears went on a 17-7 run to stretch their advantage to 12 points, 59-47, with 6:44 left in the game. East Central was unable to come any closer than eight points the rest of the way as the home team won their fifth game in their last six tries.

“I’m very proud of our defensive effort (tonight),” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “Katrina (Littlepage) was outstanding on both ends of the floor and April (Levy) made some big shots. However, we need to finish games with a better sense of urgency.”

Littlepage went 9-16 from the field and 10-14 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with 28 points on the night. She also had seven rebounds. Levy was also in double figures with 14 points.

Fredrikah Wilson added eight points for the Lady Bears while Cassie Berry had six and Chicurial Hill both added six. Avery scored five points and Tee Myers netted four. Southwest hit 15 of 27 free throws.

East Central was led by Xzandra Dowd’s 19 points. The Lady Warriors made good on eight of 11 free throws.
