Lady Bears suffer tough loss at Pearl River

The Southwest Lady Bears’ four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt in Poplarville Thursday night as Pearl River overcame a 10-point second-half deficit to win 56-55. The Bears’ second-half rally fell short as they went down 71-62.

Southwest stays on the road Tuesday as they travel to Utica to face Hinds Community College. Game times are 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.

Outshooting Pearl River 56% (14-25) to 29 % (9-31) in the first half of the ladies game, Southwest seemed to have things well in hand. An Elayne Robinson bucket with 0:16 to play put the Lady Bears (8-6, 1-3) up 32-20 and they took a 32-22 lead into the locker room at the break.

Outshooting the Lady Bears 46.7% (14-30) to 23.8% (5-21) in the second half, Pearl River (5-7, 2-2) slowly crept back into the game. Trailing 34-24 with 19:00 to play, the Lady Wildcats fought their way back. Daiquari Raine’s bucket with 1:46 to play tied the score at 51-51. She then hit another to give the Lady Wildcats their first lead, 53-51, with 1:02 to play.

Regaining their composure, Southwest tied the score at 53-53 on Cassie Berry’s two-pointer with 0:44 to play and went up 55-53 on a pair of Katrina Littlepage free throws at the 0:09 mark. Driving the length of the court, the Pearl River stunned the Lady Bears as Chaquita McGee hit a three-pointer from deep in the corner with 0:03 on the clock to provide the winning points.

“That last play gave them (Pearl River) more points,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris, “but, the missed assignments in the middle of the game are what cost us tonight. We did not rebound well and these areas of toughness must improve.”

“One positive thought,” Harris concluded, “(was) I thought Cassie Berry had a good game offensively.” Berry finished 7-10 from the field to lead all scorers with 14 points.

April Levy was also in double figures for Southwest, finishing with 11 points. Littlepage netted eight points while Fredrikah Wilson had six. Alexis Avery and Chicurial Hill both scored four, Milesha McNulty and Tee Myers both had three and Robinson had two. The Lady Bears hit 16 of 24 free throws.

McGee had 12 points to pace Pearl River. The Lady Wildcats were 7-14 from the free throw line.
