Women's Basketball Michael D. Gunnell, Southwest Sports Information

Lady Bears prevail 63-61 in overtime

The Lady Bears had to go to overtime, but they won their third straight game Thursday with a 63-61 win over host Holmes in Goodman. The Bears were not as fortunate as they dropped an 84-69 decision to Holmes men.

Southwest will return to the court Monday when they host their arch-rivals, the Lady Wolves and Wolves of Co-Lin. The ladies’ game is set for 5:30 with the men to follow at 7:15.

The ladies game featured five ties and five lead changes, in the first half, and scoring runs that made it seem as if both teams would win in a blowout.

After an Elayne Robinson basket gave Southwest (7-5) a 14-11 lead with 10:08 to play in the first half, the Lady Bulldogs (6-7) went on a 12-0 run to go up 23-14 at the 4:29 mark. The Lady Bears then closed out the half on a 10-0 run, capped by a Katrina Littlepage free throw, to take a 24-23 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Bears threatened to blow the game wide open in the second half as they started the final 20:00 on an 11-0 run to go up 35-23 with 15:52 on the clock. April Levy nailed a jumper to start the streak. But, the hosts showed they had some fight left in them as they exploded for 13 straight points to take a 36-35 lead with 11:41 left in the game.

Things settled down for both teams after that as they traded baskets and leads the rest of the way. The Lady Bears took a 53-49 lead, with 4:11 to play, on a pair of Fredrikah Wilson free throws, but a Krystal Baker basket and free throws by Jasmine Edwards and Baker tied the game at 53-53 with seconds remaining. Holmes had a shot at victory at the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim to force the extra frame.

Alexis Avery fired in a three-pointer to open the overtime and put Southwest on top 56-53. The Lady Bears built their lead to five points on three occasions and held on for the win to sweep the season series against Holmes.

“Tonight our girls were physically and mentally ready for their competition,” said Southwest assistant coach Charinee Mitchell. “We were able to press for the first time for a long period of time. Overall, I give our girls an “A” for their effort, energy and the competitiveness they gave us tonight.”

Littlepage led three Lady Bears in double figures with 16 points in the game. Wilson scored 11 while Cassie Berry netted 10. Tee Myers registered eight points and Avery and Levy both had six. Robinson scored four points and Milesha McNulty two. Southwest made 16 of 21 free throws.

Holmes’ DeNesha Dillard led all scorers with 18 points on the night. The Lady Bulldogs made nine of 13 charity shots.
