Lady Bears suffer another tough loss

It was another “what might have been” game for Southwest Monday night in Decatur as the Lady Bears dropped a tough 71-66 decision to the host East Central Lady Warriors.

Holding a 18-10 lead after a Shanekqua Bibbs’ basket with 11:37 to play in the first half, the Lady Bears (3-17, 0-9 South) were unable to maintain the advantage as East Central (7-13, 6-3) scored 22 of the next 36 points to send the teams into a 32-32 tie at the end of the half.

In the second half, East Central moved out to a 38-34 lead with 16:59 on the clock. The Lady Bears then outscored their hosts 22-12 over the next 9:02 to take a 56-50 lead on a Bibbs basket with 7:57 to play.

The wheels then fell off for the Lady Bears as East Central went on a 14-0 run to go ahead 64-56 with 4:26 left in the game. Southwest was able to cut the lead down to three points, 65-62, with 1:08 left, but six points from Kelcia Bufkin in the final 0:59 helped the Lady Warriors escape with the victory.

Shaniece Sheffield had 23 points, and Bibbs 22, to pace the Lady Bears’ offense. Cassie Berry and Lacey Orr both scored six points while Alexis Avery netted five points and Julencia Brown four. Orr had 10 rebounds. Southwest hit 11 of 17 free throws.

East Central’s Bufkin scored 21 points from three point range and finished with a game-high 32 points to lead scorers. The Lady Warriors were good on 20 of 23 free throws.

Southwest returns home Thursday to host Mississippi Gulf Coast. The ladies tip off at 5:00 with the men to follow at approximately 7:00.
