Lady Bears drop Division game at Gulf Coast

Poor shooting was the downfall for Southwest Monday night as the Lady Bears dropped an 88-71 and the Bears went down 84-66 at Mississippi Gulf Coast in Perkinston. With the losses both Southwest teams fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the South.

Despite having four players scoring in double figures, the Lady Bears were held back by an overall shooting performance as Gulf Coast (7-3, 1-1) in the opener. Southwest went 12-27 from the field in the first half (44%) while the hosts hit 19 of 26 (73.1%), while the hosts hit 73 as the Lady Bulldogs built a 45-31 lead at the break .

While Gulf Coast cooled off to 52.6% percent in the second half (20-38), Southwest was unable to get anything going as the Lady Bulldogs pulled away for the win.

Afterwards, Southwest head coach Brent Harris said he was “disappointed in our effort on the board (Gulf Coast outrebounded the Lady Bears 33-21). Obviously, they’re bigger than us, but we still didn’t block out very well.”

“We did execute some things offensively that we’ve been working on,” he continued. “Now, we’re going to study for exams (Southwest students begin final exams on Thursday).”

April Levy led the Lady Bears with 16 points on the night while Katrina Littlepage and Milesha McNulty both had 14. Fredrikah Wilson was also in double figured with 12 points.

Alexis Avery chipped in five points with Chicurial Hill added four. Madison Jones, Tee Myers and Elayne Robinson all scored two points. Southwest hit 13 of 20 free throws.

Gulf Coast was led by Samara Dingiswayo’s 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs hit all six of their free throws on the night.

After taking time off for final exams, Southwest returns to the court one more time in 2012 when they host Delgado on December 11. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
