Lady Bears pick up easy win over Meridian

It was a great night all around for the Southwest basketball teams Monday as both teams came away with easy wins over visiting Meridian. The Lady Bears came out on top 82-63 while the Bears were 91-52 victors.

The Meridian ladies (1-1) stayed with Southwest for the first few minutes of the game, holding a 9-8 lead with 16:28 to play in the first half. But, after that, it was all Southwest. A Katrina Littlepage bucket with 16:15 showing on the clock put the Lady Bears up 10-9 and they were never headed the rest of the night.

A Chicurial Hill two-pointer with 1:35 to play in the half put the Southwest up 47-27 and they maintained the 20-point advantage (50-30) as the first half ended.

The Lady Eagles (1-1) tried to make a game of it in the second half, pulling to within nine points (61-52) on Gelese Lampton’s basket with 10:13 left in the game. But, Southwest went on a 17-5 run to go up 78-57 with 4:51 to play as they cruised to the win.

“I was very proud of our total team effort,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “Offensively, we shared the ball and took good shots. Defensively, we had some individuals step up and defend and our team defense was ready.”

“Fredrikah (Wilson) and Cassie (Berry) scored well in the post ,” Harris went on, “and Katelyn (Whaley) shot the ball well from behind the arc (three-point line). It was a great win (but) we’ve got to get better tomorrow.”

Berry led the Lady Bears with 18 points on the night while Whaley and Wilson both had 17. Whaley hit five of 13 three-point shots. Littlepage was also in double figures with 11 points. She also had six assists.

Hill picked up six points, and six assists, for Southwest while April Levy also had six (and four assists) and Alexis Avery netted five. Milesha McNulty and Tee Myers both registered one point. The Lady Bears were nearly perfect from the free throw line, hitting six of eight.

Meridian’s Gelese Lampton led all scorers with 28 points. The Lady Eagles were good on nine of 15 charity shots.

Southwest goes on the road for its next action Thursday as they travel to Moorhead to take on Mississippi Delta. Tip-off is set for 6:00 for the ladies and 8:00 for the men.
