Lady Bears ease by Southern-Shreveport

Day one of the Southwest/Coca-Cola Classic provided lots of excitement and two close finishes for Southwest fans as the hosts swept Southern-Shreveport. The Lady Bears held on for a 73-69 win while the Bears overcame a 19-point, second-half deficit to escape with a 69-68 victory.
 
In the early games, Northwest swept Co-Lin, winning the women’s game 67-62 and the men’s 76-66.
 
The first half of the ladies’ game featured five ties and three lead changes and ended the way it started, with the teams tied, as neither could pull away from the other. The Lady Jags (2-3) took an early 3-0 lead, but Southwest (3-1) came back to eventually go on top 14-9 on April Levy’s bucket with 13:38 on the clock.
 
Southern-Shreveport overcame that deficit to go back on top by four, 26-22, on Jasmine Taylor’s free throw with 3:29 left before the break. With 1:24 to play, an Alexis Avery jumper put Southwest back on top 29-26 before Triana Wilridge hit a three-pointer with 0:24 to provide the halftime score of 29-29.
 
The teams were tied at 31-31 and 33-33 early in the second half before the Lady Bears took the lead for good on Katelyn Whaley’s three-pointer with 18:55 to play in the game. A Fredrikah Wilson jumper with 15:37 to play put Southwest up by 11, 48-37.
 
The Lady Jags pulled back to within four points, 52-48, 11:55 to play. That proved to be as close as they would get until Wilridge fired in a three-pointer with 0:04 on the clock to provide the final four-point margin of victory for Southwest.
 
“I’m very proud of the win,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. (But) we need to play with more energy and purpose. We must value each possession. We need to play much better to compete with Northwest.” Southwest closes out the Coca-Cola Classic against the Lady Rangers in a rematch of both teams’ season-opener.
 
Wilson led for Lady Bears in double figures with 18 points on the night as she went 5-6 from the field and 8-10 from the free throw line. She also picked up eight rebounds.
Whaley hit five of 10 three pointers to finish the game with 15 points. Levy went 6-8 from the field to score 12 points while Katrina Littlepage recorded a double-double, scoring 10 points while pulling in 10 rebounds. She also led the team with five assists.
 
Alexis Avery netted six points while Chicurial Hill and Elayne Robinson both recorded four. Cassie Berry and Tee Myers both had two points. The Lady Bears hit 15 of 22 free throws.
 
Wilridge scored 20 points for Southern-Shreveport to lead all scorers. The Lady Jags made went 6-11 from the free throw line.
 
Southwest will play Northwest Tuesday night to close out the Classic with the ladies set for a 5:30 start and the men at 7:30. The early games will feature the Co-Lin and Southern-Shreveport women at 1:30 with the men’s teams scheduled to tip off at 3:30.
