Bears’ unable to close deal at East Central despite strong start

Box Score Just 48 hours removed from a heartbreaking defeat at home to Northeast, the Bears were aiming to right the wrongs on the road at East Central.

And despite getting off to a strong start, Southwest ran out of gas in the end falling 27-25, 25-21, 13-25, 15-25, 9-15 Wednesday night.

"Once again we find ourselves up 2-0 and continue with the same lineup that helped us get there," Southwest head coach Chris Laird said. "We've had a lead over just about everyone and struggle to finish."

The Bears (1-9, 0-3) came out in rhythm in the first set racing out to a 4-0 lead and even though the Warriors drew even, Southwest pulled away once again.

Despite East Central coming back once again, Southwest displayed great resiliency and finished off the hosts in the first set with the final two points.

It was more of the same in the second set as Southwest continued to play a strong brand of volleyball eventually putting a bow on the set to jump ahead 2-0.

However, from there, the Bears continued to fight but could not finish in the end, as the Warriors got into rhythm in the third, fourth and fifth sets. The Bears, unfortunately, couldn't match the intensity as East Central walked away with the match win.

"We have a lot of season left and I hope we start playing with confidence when the match is on the line," Laird said.

The Bears return home Monday to host Itawamba at 5 p.m.
