Box Score Going into Monday's road match at Gulf Coast, the Bears were hoping to use their extended break from last week to their advantage and pick up a win against the Bulldogs. And despite picking up a win in the first set, the Bears, unfortunately, could not keep it going, losing 25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 26-28.
The Bears (3-11, 2-5 MACCC South) became locked in battle early on. Southwest went on a run about halfway through the first set getting a kill from Tierra Martin, her second of the set, making the score 14-9.
Towards the end of the set, the Bears held a slight lead over the host Bulldogs before a kill from Saylor Hammond and an ace from Hailey Eckert provided the final two points of the first set.
Key kills early in the second half from Martin and Eckert helped the push the Bears who were once again locked in a close battle with the Bulldogs. However, in the end, Southwest lost focus and dropped the second set.
The Bears showed grit in Set 3, down 7-5 in before scoring four-straight to make it 9-7. Despite this, Southwest couldn't close the deal as Gulf Coast claimed the set to take the lead.
In the fourth set, Southwest went on a bit of a rally in the taking a 14-11 lead, looking to extend the match. The visitors continued to fight but couldn't quite get the final push it needed as the hosts battled back and took the set and the match.
Southwest returns home on Wednesday to face Jones at 6 p.m.
