Box Score The Lady Bears have had a very positive start to the regular season and were hoping to carry over that momentum into Tuesday's conference opener at Co-Lin. And despite scoring a goal in the first half, one mistake allowed Co-Lin to draw even, and neither were able to add any more as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
After the match, Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said that she was pleased with how her team played but the rare mistake proved costly.
"We fell asleep for a few seconds, and we gave up a goal on a set piece," she said. "Being consistent and staying focused for 90 minutes (is key) because it cost us a goal."
The Lady Bears (4-0-2, 0-0-1 MACCC) battled with the Lady Wolves early on before breaking through. In the 24
th minute Southwest took advantage of a penalty on the Co-Lin goalkeeper setting up a penalty shot from about 30 yards out. Sophomore Evie Peet did the honors and placed the ball nicely in the upper left corner of the goal putting the Lady Bears up 1-0.
That score stayed true for the remainder of the half as reigning MACCC Goalkeeper of the Week Addison Champagne and the Southwest defense prevented Co-Lin from getting its offense established.
Early in the second half, however, the Lady Wolves broke through with a header on a corner kick tying the match at 1 in the 49
th minute.
Southwest tried to break the tie with one final push but couldn't find the same magic it had earlier as the match ended in a draw.
The Lady Bears will be back in Summit on Friday hosting East Central at 5 p.m. in the conference home opener.
