A week after the season opening loss to Alcorn State, the Bear Tennis teams were right back in action Friday facing a familiar opponent in Hinds in non-conference action. And following a tough battle against the Eagles, the Men's Team prevailed 6-3 and the Women's Team fell 9-0.
"It is just the start and what I told the team afterwards is that we worked hard the last five days of practice and they just got a taste. They got a taste of the fruit from their hard labor and this is just the start," Southwest head coach Dean Clower said.
Among the winners for the Men (1-1) was No 1 singles Mansur Khajimuradov who won his match 6-1, 6-1; No. 4 singles Cameron Leon who won his match 6-1, 6-2; No. 5 singles Jay Magee who came out on top 6-4, 6-3 and No. 6 singles Thomas Simpson who won 6-2, 6-3.
The remaining two wins for Southwest came in doubles play where the No. 1 doubles team of Khajimuradov and Manan Kumar won their match 8-1 and the No. 3 doubles team of Magee and Simpson won their match 8-2.
Both the Men's and Women's Teams will return to action on Friday Feb. 14 as they host East Central at 2 p.m. to open conference play.
