Bears Shooting Woes Catch Up to Them Late, Fall to Pirates at Home

In a game that was evenly matched for 26 minutes, the final score showed a different story. Pensacola State won 85-55, but the game was a back and forth affair until a 42-16 run to end the game for the Pirates.

The Bears and Pirates were in a tough battle, with the Pirates shooting from outside and the Bears dominating the glass and scoring in the paint. The Bears had eight offensive rebounds in the first half leading to 13 second chance points. Getting contributions on that front from multiple front court players. The Pirates had a hot hand from the three-point line, with four different players hitting two threes in the first half giving them eight as a team. The Pirates held a slight edge 37-30 at the break, and it felt like it was going to be a game that came down to the wire.

Coming out to start the second half, the Bears (2-4) seemed to find a rhythm offensively, making some plays that got the Pirates out of their zone. After a layup by Sophomore Courterius Scott in transition that cut the score to 39-43, Coach Corey Schmidt called a timeout to get his defense set at 14:20 on the clock. The wheels came off for the Bears after that.

Sophomore Alex Madrid for the Pirates hit threes on two of the next three possessions to give him four threes on the night, and that ignited a big run for Pensacola State to end the game. Madrid came into the game having only hit one three on the season, but he was comfortable tonight and sparked the Pirates big win.

The Bears were led in scoring by Sophomore Leano Rolle with 17 points. He was the only Bear in double figures, and he was also the only one to hit a three pointer. Rolle made three on the night. The Bears also struggled from the free throw line, hitting only 10 of 16.

Coach Schmidt had this to say after the game, "Just a tough night. They shot incredibly well and we did not. That's the name of the game, putting the ball in the hole. Disappointed we couldn't stick with it there and keep battling in spite of that. I thought we got down on ourselves there with about 13 minutes to play and just let our bad offense affect our defense. We will keep working and be ready to go Monday though, our guys have had a great mindset of attacking our development this year and learning from both our wins and our losses."

Southwest is back in action Monday night against Southern Shreveport at 7:30 when they host their annual Coca-Cola Classic. There will be 4 games both Monday and Tuesday, alternating between women's games and men's games starting at 1pm each day.
