Bears shine in shutout win over Holmes

Following last week's tough outing at Hinds, the Bears rebounded and in a big way Tuesday getting a shutout win at home over Holmes.

"We had to come out and play our (type of) game," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "I'm thankful that they did because they could have hung their heads down after last week, but they knew that they were better than what the result showed and they had to prove it. Holmes is a strong team and they had some good results this year and to make sure that we made a statement at home was a big deal for us."

An aggressive style from the Bears (5-5-1, 2-3-1 MACCC) was put on display early. Their hard work paid off and the results began displaying on the scoreboard.

In the 18th minute the duo of Ilan Marin and Max Ruelke kicked off their big nights as the former had a key pass and found the latter who scored a goal just inside the right post putting the hosts up 1-0.

Not even 3:00 later, Marin shined again with another assist, this time connecting with Yanis Rachidi who sent the ball past the Bulldog goalkeeper and into the net making it a 2-0 game.

Early in the second half, Marin and Ruelke recreated the first goal of the game, except the roles were reversed. Marin got the pass from Ruelke before a shot from about 10 yards out went in, making it 3-0.

"Max passed me a really good ball and I saw the goalkeeper go to the left so I shot towards the right," Marin said. "My parents came all the way from France to see my game and I'm really happy about that."

Southwest capped-off the big night in the 64th minute as Orlando Hernandez scored after getting a rebound.

The Bears held off a late surge by Holmes to preserve the shutout.

Marin finished with a goal and two assists while Ruelke had a goal and an assist.

Southwest hits the road for its next contest which comes Friday at 3 p.m. in Fulton against the Itawamba Indians.
