Bears outlast Meridian, get win on Sophomore Night

Box Score In preparation for their final road test later in the week, the Bears got the momentum boost they needed Tuesday with a big 1-0 win over visiting Meridian on Sophomore Night.

The Bears (6-7-1, 3-5-1 MACCC) became locked in a battle with the Eagles early on. While both offenses pushed forward with opportunities to light up their respective side of the scoreboard first, neither could get past the opposing defense.

It wasn't until the 63rd minute when Southwest broke the tie and grabbed the advantage as Brian Sanchez got a pass from Tyler Walsh before sending a beautiful shot to the far left corner of the goal and past the Meridian goalkeeper putting the Bears up 1-0.

"I saw (Tyler) Walsh and the left back wasn't there," Sanchez said. "I just called for the ball like crazy and I took a touch, dribbled and I saw the keeper off to the side. It was a crazy angle but I said I am going to shoot it, it is Sophomore Night."

The score by Sanchez only provided more inspiration and motivation for the Southwest defense to not only continue to push hard but also try to maintain the shutout.

The defense as a whole did just that as the Bears held a scrappy Eagles squad off the board to get the win.

"Getting the shutout is nice," Southwest head coach Zach Mills said. "It was a good game for us, I thought that we played really well. I'm really happy that they stuck it out. It was Sophomore Night and getting the win was a huge accomplishment for the boys."

Next up for Southwest is a contest Friday at Northwest. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Senatobia.
