GOODMAN — Playing in their final contest of a month-long stretch of games away from Summit, the Lady Bears wanted to build some momentum with a win Thursday at Holmes. But the Lady Bulldogs scored six of the final eight points in the overtime period as Southwest fell 77-73.
After the contest, Southwest head coach Brent Harris said that he's hoping that a home game will be just what his teams needs to get back on track.
"Keep in mind that we have been on the road a lot lately," he said. "We are looking forward to being in the friendly confines of the Bear Basketball Center on Saturday."
The Lady Bears (10-5, 0-2 MACCC) displayed a balanced attack early on as five different players registered points in the first quarter, led by four each from Mookie Lampley and Bethany Graves. Southwest grabbed the lead and never relinquished it in the opening frame, leading 15-12 at the end of the first 10:00 of play.
The Lady Bears kept that momentum going in the early stages of the second, stretching their lead to as much as six at 18-12 at the 9:00 mark following a free throw by Moosie Walls.
But the Lady Bulldogs took the momentum back eventually drawing even with Southwest at 25-25 at the half.
Towards the latter half of the third quarter, Southwest got out of rhythm and fell behind by as much as six before slightly narrowing the gap to five at 49-44 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth both teams were locked in a tight battle and after Holmes took a 65-62 lead with :17 to go, Kalea Williams nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game. One final defensive stand on the other end of the floor resulted in overtime, tied at 65.
In the extra period, even though Southwest erased two-point deficits three times in the first 4:00 of the session, they could not keep it going as Holmes held on for the win.
Lampley led the Lady Bears with 19 points while Graves posted 14.
Southwest returns home on Saturday to host East Mississippi at 5 p.m.
