Lady Bears shine in win at Arkansas-Cossatot

Following a bit of a slow start in the first half, the Lady Bears ramped up their play in the second pulling away from host Arkansas-Cossatot before sealing a 7-2 win Saturday.

Southwest head coach Nicole Cooper said that a new formation proved to be a big help for her team.

"We changed our formation up a little bit and we have been testing a few things throughout the past couple of games," she said. "Depending on how the other team plays, we make the adjustments and if we can spread the field wide and stretch them, then that's how we want to do."

The change proved vital for Southwest (2-1) as freshman Evie Peet kicked off the scoring in the 20th minute with a goal of a beautiful loft shot from about 30 yards out after getting a key pass from Abby Davis.

The slim lead, however, did not last for the visitors as the Lady Colts tied the match 16 minutes later.

Early in the second half, the Lady Bears came out with more aggression, and it showed on the scoreboard. Tristan Byrd gave Southwest a 2-1 lead with a goal before Peet added another goal of her own 5:00 later. She made her presence known once again just 3:00 later as she passed the ball to Maylee McLeod who scored to make it a 4-1 game.

After another 3:00, the Lady Bears added another goal, this time off of Kayla Martin.

During the next 9:00 of play, Peet continued her huge day with two more assists, one to Byrd and the second to Gabby Venable, the latter of the two made it a 7-1 contest.

Cossatot scored its second and final goal down the stretch making the score the eventual final.

Peet finished the day with two goals scored and three assists. Byrd also had a big game with a pair of goals, herself.

The Lady Bears will close out their early season road trip on Tuesday with a 5:00 match in Jackson against Tougaloo College.
