Lady Bears top Northwest Mississippi on the road

The Lady Bears have been on a roll as of late and the momentum is still well within their grasp following Saturday's 57-44 win at Northwest Mississippi in a makeup game from two weeks prior.

"I thought that we handled the trip with focus," Southwest head coach Brent Harris said. "We adjusted to their changing defenses. We just need to finish games stronger."

The Lady Bears (13-4, 4-0 MACCC) and the Lady Rangers both got off to slow starts offensively as the opposing defenses shined early.

Kara Beth Addison posted the first points of the game at the 5:38 mark and it opened up the Southwest offense. Veronica Williams followed suit with a 3-pointer before Addison made a long ball of her own pushing the Lady Bear lead to 9-4. Free throws were key for the Lady Bears in the opening frame as they helped the visitors take a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

Makes from Morgan Sullivan and Kennedee Shelton helped keep the Lady Bears ahead in the second quarter as Northwest began to find its offense and kept pace. After the Lady Rangers pulled within six once again, the Lady Bear offense rallied to take a 12-point lead at 27-15.

Northwest narrowed the gap a bit making it a 27-20 Southwest lead at the half.

Early in the third quarter, however, the Lady Bears went on a run once again, making it a double-digit lead which lasted until about halfway through the period.

The Southwest balanced attack continued to shine as the visitors took a 42-23 lead into the final quarter.

Down the stretch, a 3-pointer from Navaeh Craft helped kick-start a 15-point fourth quarter for Southwest. Even though the offense continued to shine, the defense had some trouble slowing down the Lady Rangers who attempted to make a comeback but came up short.

Addison led the Lady Bears with 12 points while Williams posted 11 along with 9 rebounds.

Southwest will once again be on the road for its next contest as it travels to Ellisville Monday to face Jones at 5:30 p.m.
