The Bears entered Tuesday's road game at No. 16 Panola hoping to pick up another win over a ranked opponent. But inconsistent play hurt Southwest as it fell 88-74.
"Honestly, I thought that we really didn't play that well on either side of the floor," Southwest head coach Corey Schmidt said. "We have to execute better on the offensive end. On the defensive end, there were some missed assignments."
Despite the struggles, the Bears (1-2) got off to a positive start. Sophomore LeVionne Lindsey scored nine of Southwest's first 14 points as the Bears held a slight lead over the Ponies.
As time continued to tick away in the first half, Tylik Weeks and Fazl Oshodi took over the reigns in scoring as they posted 11 points apiece. However, Southwest trailed 43-37 at the half.
In the second half, it was more of the same as far as scoring as Lindsey, Oshodi and Weeks led the charge with 8, 9 and 10 points to finish with 17, 20 and 21 points, respectively. And despite the Bears narrowing the gap and taking a slight lead a few minutes into the second half, they lost momentum down the stretch as the Ponies regained the upper hand and pulled out the win.
The Bears will have their home opener on Thursday at 6 p.m. against Baton Rouge Post Grad Academy.
